Yesterday we attended our very first Bat Mitzvah for our dear friend, Brooke. Mackenzie and Brooke have been friends since birth. The hour long ceremony began downstairs at a country club. The entire ceremony was lead by the Rabbi and Brooke. It was spoken in both Hebrew and English. Brooke spent years preparing for this event, she did a truly amazing job.

This is my favorite picture from the ceremony. You can see the Rabbi, Brooke and the Torah between Brooke's father on the left and Brooke's mother on the right.

After the ceremony, we headed upstairs for a four hour reception.

Another first for Mackenzie, she was invited to sit at the head table. She had never sat at a long table facing all the other guests seated at circular tables.

We were able to participate in a number of Jewish traditions. One was the cutting of the Challah bread by Brooke's maternal grandfather.

We danced the Hora circle dance while Brooke was placed in a chair and bounced up and down.

The most touching tradition was the candle lighting ceremony. Twelve groups were called up to light a candle. Brooke was the master of ceremonies and announced each honoree.

Brooke's parents (Emily and Brian) were the last honorees and Brooke lit the final candle herself.

The dance party was started with a father/daughter dance. Speaking of the dancing, the same DJ from Brian and Emily's wedding was the DJ for this event. Not only that, Brian and Emily's wedding reception was held in this very same room.

Lastly, it was great to see old friends. Sadly, I missed my chance for a group shot of the five of us who taught together years ago. All of our babies were born within months of each other. We attended some of each other's weddings, baby showers, baptisms and kid's first birthday parties. I must say that might have been years ago but we all still look fantastic. To Brian and Emily, thanks for including us in one heck of a party!!!
